Exciting England Under-21 midfielder who joined the Hammers from Tottenham at the beginning of August as part of the deal that saw Fredi Kanoute move the other way.

Matthew made his name as a young player at Peterborough United, coming through their youth ranks to make 56 senior appearances.

Moved to Spurs in December 1999 for £500,000 and played nearly 50 first-team games for the club. Unable to command a regular first-team spot at White Hart Lane, the 22-year-old left footer was more than happy to join the Hammers where he has added balance to the squad as well as supplying ammunition for the strikers.
